It's a Twin Thing!
February 17, 2014
By now, it’s pretty obvious, we’re twins. :-) And for those who aren’t sure, yes we are identical, but to be honest, we have always joked that we are probably fraternal twins. As much as some people think we resemble, we don’t think we look that much alike. But then there are times when we are floored at how similar we look, it’s still weird. People always make so many assumptions about twins, and they don’t mind asking you everything that comes to their mind. It is cute sometimes, and other times, well, it’s annoying and all I want to do is give a blank stare that reads on my face as “really, you just asked me that”? But I get the fascination, I mean heck, I am Marcia and I went on the Ricky Lake Show in 1997 for a show about twins, it was an amazing experience. CLICK HERE TO SEE US LIVE
So I’ve compiled a list of the top 5 things I think you should know about twins based on the questions I’ve gotten over the years, here goes:
1) We don’t know what it is like to be a twin…
…because we have nothing to compare it to. Honestly it’s always kind of hard for me to answer someone when they ask me “what’s it like to be a twin” because being a twin is my normal. To know what it feels like is to be able to know what it feels like NOT to be a twin. So yeah, I got nothing!
2) We really don’t like being compared –
Yeah, this is a biggie. It’s natural, I guess. But twins really are compared from day one, from comparing facial features, who cries the most, etc., etc. But what most do not consider is how this creates a sense of competition between twins where there should be none. Identical twins, despite being genetically the same, are still individuals. And honestly, we have personally struggled to establish ourselves apart from one another. Certainly there are things where we are a lot of like due to nurture, but our nature is as distinct as single born siblings. I guess being me, I assume people understood this. *shrugs*
3) We really don’t understand why people expect there to be a good or evil twin
I mean seriously, do you really expect someone to say “yeah, it’s me, I’m the mean one”?
4) No, we can’t feel it when the other is pinched
5) IT REALLY DOES NOT MATTER WHO IS OLDEST!
I mean really, come on! Seven whole minutes make her my big sister? You can probably tell by now, yeah you guessed it, I was born second. LOL
But really, what difference does it make? All my life, even to this day, one of the first things I am asked by someone after learning I am a twin is “who is the oldest”. My sons, who are twins as well, get the same thing. It’s as 1st twins are expected to have some experience in life because they came through the womb first. So yeah, don’t ask me that question – ever again in life! LOL So these are my top five, I am sure Marcia can add her own perspective. But hey, we know people are curious, so if you ask a question I think you shouldn’t, I will continue to be polite and oblige your curiosity, because after all I love being a twin! :)
